Ethnic Textiles for Sale

The following is a selection of our ethnic textiles for sale. There are fine examples of Indian, Guatemalan, Laotian, Hmong, and San Blas (molas)n textles. The Indian pieces are up to 20 years old and form a very important part of a girl's dowry. Fine pieces like these have become scarce because so many were destroyed by the earthquake in Gujarat Province a few years ago.

Packing and shipping are extra. Most packing is $4.00 and shipping charge is based on the exact weight of the piece when packed and the location to which it is going. Those items that require special packing are marked.

Handwoven faja, Solola, Guatemala. 6"W X128" L. About half the length of the textile has the decorative supplementary weft design woven in. The remainder is striped plain weave with jaspe bands. $85.

LAOTIAN TEXTILES
 

LAOTIAN TEXTILE 1
Phasin, traditional tube skirt, cotton with some supplementary silk weft. Alternating stripes of weft ikat and double weave figures. Very fine example.

LAOTIAN TEXTILE 2
Phasin, traditional tube skirt, cotton with narrow yellow and white silk double weave stripes between the wide weft ikat stripes.

LAOTIAN TEXTILE 3
Silk supplementary weft on a cotton background.
This a double weave -- both sides are "good" sides. The diamond motif shows the skill of the weaver. 13 1/4"W X 47"L, not including fringe. $69.

Khmer Pidan weft ikat, silk weft on polyester warp, Beautiful sheer fabric. 39"W X 64 "L. (Width is selvage to selvage),$129.



HMONG TEXTILES (Northern Thailand)


Hmong Textile 1
Hmong Belt end. Very fine reverse applique and hand embroidery with machine stitch detailing in the centers of the circular lines. Very good condition. 6 1/4"W X 5 1/2"H.

Hmong Hat 1
Child's hat, Yao hill tribe. Fine cross stitch embroidery on indigo dyed fabric. Good condition with moderate crocking of the indigo dye on the embroidery.

Sleeve from Hmong shirt. Very fine reverse applique and hand embroidery.Three narrow patterned stripes between the embroidered panels are ribbon. Good condition with some soiling.

Hmong Textile 4
Panel from the front of a Hmong jacket. Very fine cross stitch and chain stitch embroidery. Good condition with some soiling on the satin edges of the points. 11 1/2"W X 14" top to bottom. $32.

Hmong Jacket 1
Hmong boy's jacket. Very fine reverse applique and hand embroidery. Jaclet is made of iridescent black satin. Good condition with a few missing sequins and some soiling of the yellow and white satin details. 58" cuff to cuff X 15" back of neck to hem. $69.

Hmong Jaclet 2
Hmong boy's jacket. Very fine reverse applique and hand embroidery. Jaclet is made of black satin. Good condition with a little wear but almost no soiling. 59" cuff to cuff X 13" back of neck to hem. $69.

Traditional Hmong baby carrier. This went across the baby's back and the baby was tied with fabric straps to the mother's back. Fine cross stitch embroidery, very good condition. 13"W X 19"H. $62.

The molas in the following row vary from the traditional mola in that the bird and flowers are appliqued onto a background of reverse applique. Traditional molas are almost all reverse applique.

The following molas are ones which have been worn by Cuna women. They were not made for the tourist trade, so they have signs of wear and many have some stains. The colors have also faded somewhat. They have a very charming folksy feel, very different from the perfect molas above made for sale to outsiders. These molas have all been carefully washed, but stain-removing agents were not used for fear of damaging the textile or color. These pieces were bought in the San Blas Islands in the 1980's.
