Mexican,
Guatemalan, and Dominican Republic Masks and Bolivian Dolls for Sale
New masks added 11/28/11
At
the top half of this page is a group of old and new Mexican and Guatemalan
masks for sale. Descriptions accompany each mask. There are new masks
by the master mask makers Juan Orta(now deceased) of Michoacan, Mexico,
Justo Xuana of Oaxaca, and a large group of masks by award-winning Arturo
Aj-Canil, a winner of the top award in Guatemala for a woodcarver. There
are also a couple of masks by award-winning Oaxacan carver Angel Vasquez,
son of Angelica Vasquez. And there is a group of other more primitive
Guatemalan masks. This is our largest group of masks ever. The second
group of masks is vintage masks. Most come from one private collection
and were bought in Mexico in the early 1970's when the collector lived
there for several years. They are also on our older and vintage folk
art page. The third group is a small goup of paper mache masks made
for Carnaval in the Dominican Republic in the 1990's. They are from
the same collection -- the collector lived in the Dominican Republic
for a few years. These paper mache masks are made of extremely thick
material of many layers of paper.
At
the bottom of the page is a group of handmade dolls from Bolivia. Despite
the appearamce of the photos, the dolls are all roughly the same size.
The bodies are made of woven cotton fabric. The faces of the Viejo,
or old person, dolls are stitched cotton. The other faces are sculpted
from nylon stockings. All clothing is made from mostly handwoven, sometimes
handknitted, cotton or wool.

made for repeat use. The extremely elaborate Carnaval masks found there
